- Vanity & Arrogance - Saturday, February 09, 2008

Look at this short clip from the movie A Devil's Advocate.

..

Roget's Thesaurus states: "Vanity": A regarding of oneself with undue favor: amour-propre, conceit, ego, egoism, egotism, narcissism, pride, vainglory, vainness. Slang: ego trip. See self-love.

NOW: Think about how much these characteristics are growing among Muslims these days even though Islam forbids arrogance, vanity or any of the above synonyms.

Shaitan will try and fool us in the smallest and most discreet ways. Be careful and always be humble.

“And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allaah likes not any arrogant boaster. And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking, and lower your voice. Verily, the harshest of all voices is the braying of the asses.”
[Luqmaan 31:18-19]

Thank ALLAH for your successes and make duaa to ALLAH that He protect you and all Muslims from the evil of ourselves: our arrogance.

- The Haram Police (Ummah Films) -

Assalamu Alaikom,
Sad to say, this happens a lot in the Muslim ummah. We are quick to criticize and label what others are doing as haram without looking at our own actions and trying to fix ourselves as well. This is a sign of arrogance, something that is very despised in Islam.

"O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them....and do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames." (Qur'an 49:11)

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq [ra] said: "I heard Allah's Apostle [saws] saying: "When people see an oppressor but do not prevent him from (doing evil), it is likely that Allah will punish them all.' " [Abu Dawud & At-Tirmidhi]

and He, (saw) continued and said:

"Nay, by Allah, you either enjoin good and forbid evil and catch hold of the hand of the oppressor and persuade him to act justly and stick to the truth, or Allah will involve the hearts of some of you with the hearts of others and will curse you as He had cursed them." [Abu Dawud & At-Tirmidhi]

Abdullah bin Mas..ud [ra] reported: Allah's Messenger [saws] said, "The first defect (in religion) which affected the Children of Israel in the way that man would meet another and say to him: ..Fear Allah and abstain from what you are doing, for this is not lawful for you.'

- Revelation in "Passion of the Christ" -

The prophecy depicted in this movie can be found in the Bible, Gospel according to John:16. However, in the bible the word used there is "Helper", an english translation that comes from the Greek word paraclete. However, we know that Jesus pbuh spoke neither English nor Greek. He spoke Aramaic, as seen in the movie.

- Hijab Etiquette -

I get a lot of questions about hijab sent to me, so here is an article about Hijab Etiquette (Source: anwary-islam.com).

This is a very good site about hijab: Muhajabah: Tips for Beginning to Wear the Hijab. It discusses the proper rules of hijab, and encourages women to wear hijab and put away any fears.

AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE
The hijab is an act of obedience to Allah and to his prophet (pbuh), Allah says in the Qur'an: ..It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His messenger have decreed a matter that they should have an option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, has indeed strayed in a plain error.' (S33:36).

Allah also said: 'And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc) and not to show off their adornment except what must (ordinarily) appear thereof, that they should draw their veils over their Juyubihinna.'(S24:31).

Juyubihinna: The respected scholars from As-Salaf As-Saleh (righteous predecessors) differed whether the veil cover of the body must include the hands and face or not. Today, respected scholars say that the hands and face must be covered. Other respected scholars say it is preferable for women to cover their whole bodies.

THE HIJAB IS IFFAH (MODESTY)
Allah (subhana wa'atala) made the adherence to the hijab a manifestation for chastity and modesty. Allah says: 'O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) over their bodies (when outdoors). That is most convenient that they should be known and not molested.' (S33:59). In the above Ayaah there is an evidence that the recognition of the apparent beauty of the woman is harmful to her. When the cause of attraction ends, the restriction is removed. This is illustrated in the case of elderly women who may have lost every aspect of attraction. Allah (swt) made it permissible for them to lay aside their outer garments and expose their faces and hands reminding, however, that is still better for them to keep their modesty.

THE HIJAB IS TAHARA (PURITY)
Allah (swt) had shown us the hikma (wisdom) behind the legislation of the hijab: ..And when you ask them (the Prophet's wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and their hearts.' (S33:53).

The hijab makes for greater purity for the hearts of believing men and women because it screens against the desire of the heart. Without the hijab, the heart may or may not desire. That is why the heart is more pure when the sight is blocked (by hijab) and thus the prevention of fitna (evil actions is very much manifested. The hijab cuts off the ill thoughts and the greed of the sick hearts:

..Be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy or evil desire for adultery, etc) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.' (S33:32)

THE HIJAB IS A SHIELD
The prophet (pbuh) said: "Allah, Most High, is Heaven, is Ha'yeii (Bashful), Sit'teer (Shielder). He loves Haya' (Bashfulness) and Sitr (Shielding; Covering)." The Prophet (pbuh) also said: "Any woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband's house (to show off for unlawful purposes), has broken Allah's shield upon her. "The hadith demonstrates that depending upon the kind of action committed there will be either reward (if good) or punishment (if bad).

THE HIJAB IS TAQWAH (RIGHTEOUSNESS)
Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an: ..O children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc) and as an adornment. But the raiment of righteousness, that is better.'(S7:26). The widespread forms of dresses in the world today are mostly for show off and hardly taken as a cover and shield of the woman's body. To the believing women, however the purpose is to safeguard their bodies and cover their private parts as a manifestation of the order of Allah. It is an act of Taqwah (righteousness).

THE HIJAB IS EEMMAN (BELIER OR FAITH)
Allah (swt) did not address His words about the hijab except to the believing women, Al-Mo'minat. In many cases in the Qur'an Allah refers to the "the believing women". Aisha (RA), the wife of the prophet (pbuh), addressed some women from the tribe of Banu Tameem who came to visit her and had light clothes on them, they were improperly dressed: "If indeed you are believing women, then truly this is not the dress of the believing women, and if you are not believing women, then enjoy it."

THE HIJAB IS HAYA' (BASHFULNESS)
There are two authentic hadith which state: "Each religion has a morality and the morality of Islam is haya'" AND "Bashfulness is from belief, and belief is in Al-Jannah (paradise)". The hijab fits the natural bashfulness which is a part of the nature of women.

THE HIJAB IS GHEEERAH
The hijab fits the natural feeling of Gheerah, which is intrinsic in the straight man who does not like people to look at his wife or daughters. Gheerah is a driving emotion that drives the straight man to safeguard women who are related to him from strangers. The straight MUSLIM man has Gheerah for ALL MUSLIM women In response to lust and desire, men look (with desire) at other women while they do not mind that other men do the same to their wives or daughters. The mixing of sexes and absence of hijab destroys the Gheera in men. Islam considers Gheerah an integral part of faith. The dignity of the wife or daughter or any other Muslim woman must be highly respected and defended.

- Allah will Give Shade to Seven -

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said,
Allah will give shade to seven, on the Day when there will be no shade but His:

1. A just ruler,
2. A youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah,
3. A man whose heart is attached to the Masjid, from the time he goes out of the Masjid until he gets back to it,
4. Two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake and they meet and part in Allah's cause only,
5. A man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given,
6. A man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: "I am afraid of Allah” and
7. A person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

- Seven Reasons to Read the Qur'an -

By: Shabir Ali

(1) Intimate: It dares you to disprove it. How? It says that humans can not write a book like this even if they pooled all their resources together and got help also from the spirits. The Quran said this fourteen hundreds years ago and yet no one has been able to disprove it. Billions of books have been written - but not another one like the Quran.

(2) Incorruptible: It is the only religious sacred writing which has been in circulation for such a long time and yet remains as pure as it was in the beginning. The Quran was kept intact. Nothing was added to it; nothing was changed in it; and nothing was taken away from it ever since it was completely revealed 1400 years ago.

(3) Unsurpassable: The Quran is God's final revelation to humankind. God revealed the Torah to Moses, the Psalms to David, the Gospel to Jesus, and finally the Quran to Muhammad. Peace be upon all of them. No other book will come from God to surpass his final revelation.

(4) Indisputable: The Quran withstands the test of time and scrutiny. No one can dispute the truth of this book. It speaks about past history and turns out right. It speaks about the future in prophecies and it turns out right. It mentions details of physical phenomena which were not known to people at the time; yet later scientific discoveries confirm that the Quran was right all along. Every other book needs to be revised to accord with modern knowledge. The Quran alone is never contradicted by a modern discovery.

(5) Your Roadmap for Life and Afterlife: The Quran is the best guidebook on how to structure your life. No other book presents such a comprehensive system involving all aspects of human life and endeavor. The Quran also points out the way to secure everlasting happiness in the afterlife. It is your roadmap showing how to get to paradise.

(6) God's Gift of Guidance: God has not left you alone. You were made for a reason. God tells you why he made you, what he demands from you, and what he has in store for you. If you operate a machine contrary to it's manufacture specification you will ruin that machine. What about you? Do you have an owner's manual for you? The Quran is from your function for success lest you fail to function. It is a healing mercy from God. It satisfies the soul, and cleans the heart. It removes doubts and brings peace.

(7) Your Calling Card to Communicate with God: Humans are social creatures. We love to communicate with other intelligent life. The Quran tells us how to communicate with the source of all intelligence and the source of all life- the One God. The Quran tells us who God is, by what name we should address God, and the way in which to communicate with God. Are these not seven sufficient reasons for reading the Quran?
